Friday – Sunday, April 21-23, 2017, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
Young people cope with life’s challenges in a variety of ways that best able them to achieve their growth outcomes. However, those youth overwhelmed by stress in either crises, or over extended periods of time quite often engage in thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that defeat (and hurt) both them and others around them. Rap2grow draws on positive psychology and solution-focused work to empower adults with knowledge and abilities to respond to the whole kid–rather than react to behaviour–and then build on existing capacity and the resources in the ecology to grow “response able” youth.
As the second generation of the well-known 2005 Response Ability Pathways(RAP) course, Rap2grow builds on the original core foundations such as the four growth needs represented in the “Circle of Courage”, and an understanding of the brain’s stress response system. Rap2 goes beyond RAP with a significant emphasis on the importance of responsive contexts within the young person’s ecology, including the powerful, positive influence of cultural traditions or beliefs. The course examines universal psycho-social outcomes and the specific strengths and competencies in young people (response abilities) that create the paths to these outcomes–particularly for those young people who experience adversity and trauma (psycho-social pain).
